- Way better than I expected, but it's not like I had low expectations. "Thistledown" is a great pop song with Sam Owen's strained voice strongly redolent of Rosie's. "Wave of Translation" sounds like an early Oval track with trumpets. A lot of this – not to imply anything negative about the band's creativity – reminds me a lot of that late '90s/early '00s wave of trip hop or downtempo that took cues from space age revival lounge pop. Or perhaps some more laid-back strains of nu-jazz. Say, Alpha's The Impossible Thrill, Bonobo, Felt Mountain, Morcheeba, Broadcast, etc. I'm opposed to throwbacks without progression, but I feel this is not that. It feels like an even more eclectic continuation or "update" of their previous work. Overall, it's one of their better albums.
